Message from the Program Director, Justin Ross
Dear Prospective Students:
Welcome to this site for IU-SPEA's study abroad program in Pamplona! Here you'll find information about the course, and living in Pamplona. You'll learn about the culture and environment of Navarra and Northern Spain – explored in regular excursions during the course period.
The course is hosted by the Public University of Navarra, and team-taught by instructors from Indiana University and Spanish institutions. Students experience the diverse professional expertise and cultural backgrounds of the different instructors. Analytical tools and methods are developed and applied in the areas of health, safety, and the environment. A working knowledge of these approaches is valuable for professional development in any area, and is a plus on employment applications and applications for law school and graduate programs.
Students earn three IU credits in the course, and the dates are sequenced so that you can also take three credit hour courses in London and/or Barcelona. Scholarships reduce the price of these credits to about the same as earning them in Indiana, and students from any IU college are eligible to apply.
A cultural program is associated with the course. Students take day-long excursions in the middle of the teaching week to learn about the culture and natural environment of the region. These excursions are an integral part of the course experience.
Pamplona is a city of about 200,000 with one of the highest standards of living in Spain. It is clean and safe with a charming old town with restaurants, bars, and nightlife. The bus system is extensive, inexpensive, and easy to use. If you have never traveled outside of the United States, you'll find living in Pamplona both comfortable and exciting. If you are an experienced traveler, you’ll find Pamplona one of the best places you’ve visited.
IU students live in a dormitory of the Public University of Navarra with Spanish and other international students. Each student will have their own fully furnished room. Beyond the standard furnishings, each room is equipped with a bathroom, kitchen, cooking utensils, microwave, refrigerator, TV, and free Wi-Fi.
Students studying in Pamplona have the opportunity to learn Spanish or improve existing spanish language skills. Check out Spanish Learning Resources.
Pamplona is an excellent base for exploring Spain and France. Madrid and Barcelona are five hours by bus (four hours by train), and Paris is seven hours (six hours by high-speed train from San Sebastian). Valencia, Santander, Bilbao, Lisbon, Granada, Cordoba, Seville, and Majorca are also feasible weekend destinations. Students are encouraged to travel before and after the program, if they can, and during the course period on three-day weekends.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the academic program, the living conditions in Pamplona, or the planned cultural activities and excursions. Visit SPEA's Summer Abroad Page for Pamplona for generic information about SPEA's overseas programs, such as program costs and scholarships. A link to SPEA's "Financial Aid and Application" page for the Pamplona program can be found on the menu bar on the left.
I invite you to apply, to join the course, and enjoy living and learning in Pamplona!
Sincerely,
Justin Ross
